Deadline extension! Holiday Gifting: Group Appreciation Collection for Staff / Resources Outside the Classroom

By now you should have already received an email from
your room parent about how to contribute to a group gift for your child’s teacher and aide.
Let's not forget about all the other people who help make Walter Hays a special place! Crossing guards, Custodians, PE teachers, Office Personnel, Librarians, Resource Specialists, Attendants, Psychologists, Yard Duty personnel, and Parent Liaisons - where would we be without them?

Please consider donating a few dollars (any amount that you are comfortable with) to our Holiday Group Collection so that we can show holiday appreciation to these staff members/resources who are not covered by classroom collections. Donations can be made by December 14th by sending money via Paypal to luc@luclevesque.com. (Because I am collecting for both classroom and staff funds, please indicate in the paypal comments where the funds should be allocated).

Our goal is to recognize everyone, however, we understand that in some cases there is someone in particular you want to recognize more. If so, please indicate that with an allocation note when you submit your donation. Gifts will be given as a group rather than with individual donor names.

For questions please contact Andrea at Andrea@andrealevesque.com.
Holiday Family Recipe Share!

Dearest Walter Hays Community,

So much time will be spent at home this holiday season. Let’s come together from the most important space of our new normal – the kitchen, and to remind ourselves of what we are and how we care for each other through the most primal wayby sharing a meal together!

The one safe way we could think of is to kindly ask you to come up with one family recipe you cherish and treasure. Prepare it, write it down, take pictures and upload it. Make sure to include a photo of you and your little one’s beautiful smiles as a welcome bonus – a rare commodity in the world of masks! Have fun preparing it with your child and gain the culinary inspiration from our diverse Walter Hays community during these “safety first” holidays!

Our recipe sharing event will run from now through winter break, ending on Sunday, January 10, 2021

Please upload your recipe here.
View gallery of recipes here.

Happy Holidays!

2020-2021 Yearbook Portraits & More!

PORTRAITS! Unlike year’s past we will not be hiring an external vendor to take portrait photos for each student due to strict COVID-19 safety protocol. As such, you should be receiving an email from your Room Parent (if you haven’t already) providing a portrait submission form. Please fill out the form as soon as you can. All portrait submission forms are due by January 29th in order to make it into the final yearbook.

Yearbooks are now on sale for $25 until December 31, 2020, at which point prices will increase! Yearbooks will be made available on a first come first serve basis as we have a severely limited supply this year. Get ahead of it, don’t procrastinate!

If you have any questions, please email: walter-hays-yearbook@paloaltopta.org
A BIG “thank you” to all of our 5th graders who participated in choosing a yearbook theme and cover for the 2020-2021 school year. Get excited for the hippest yearbook you've ever seen!

This year’s theme is *drum roll* “Virtually Together!”
Activity Jar to Help Beat the “I’m Bored” Over the Holidays

Here is a simple idea to help your family stay calm and content over the holidays (or any day!)

  1. Find a jar and label it “Our Activity Jar” or make a couple of jars with different labels such as “Activities and Games,” “Let’s Eat!,” “Oh, The Places We Will Go.”
  2. On slips of paper write down fun and creative activities that you can fill your jar with. Take turns drawing from the jar.
  3. Activity Examples: Make a fort with blankets and pillows, play a board/card game, bake cookies, have a picnic (inside or outside), call a relative, write a friend, create a comedy act to perform for your parents, have a crab walk race, do a family jigsaw puzzle, find a good book to read/listen to as a family…

Enjoy! Wishing you moments of peace and unexpected joy.

Walter Hays Logo Wear - Final Weeks before Closing

Walter Hay logo wear builds community, school pride, and raises money for the school. This year the PTA created a one-stop Walter Hays logo wear site that ships all products directly to you, so there’s no waiting for distribution.

If you have some last minute gift items to purchase, please consider purchasing from the logo wear store. Profit from the store goes to Walter Hays PTA.
Needed: Nominating Committee

It’s hard to believe, but it is that time of year already when we need to look ahead to next year. We are looking for members to form a committee to find individuals for next year’s PTA board. Being on this committee is a great way to get involved and meet new people. If you are interested, please reach out to andrea@andrealevesque.com.
Read with Your Kids about December's Core Value: RESPECT

We would like to invite parents to read books with their child(ren) about December’s Core Value, RESPECT. The Palo Alto library and Walter Hays library both have books on this theme and we hope you will check them out. Here are five of the titles:

  1. Duck! Rabbit! By Amy Krouse Rosenthal
  2. Babushka’s Doll by Patricia Polacco
  3. Do Unto Otters by Laurie Keller
  4. Art & Max by David Wiesner
  5. Zero by Kathryn Otoshi

The Core Values Committee, headed by Lise Latour (lisewhpta@gmail.com) and Zeehan Selha (zrastam@hotmail.com), invite all members of the Walter Hays community to ask questions about the committee. We welcome all ideas and suggestions you may have.

Help Local Families Financially Impacted by COVID-19

The Palo Alto Community Fund (PACF) is supporting the urgent need in our nearby community, including PAUSD families. The most recent shelter-in-place order will bring additional financial needs to many families. PACF is working with school district staff to identify and support families of students attending PAUSD schools who are struggling to meet basic life needs. As PACF’s fund grows, so will the support to the community. Please donate if you are able to support this local effort.
