Positive Parenting: Young Children Adapting to COVID

PiE and CASSY are pleased to present an evening about strength and resilience in young children. Learn how adaptable your children are and how they have been coping through the pandemic. Find out how resourceful and resilient YOU are! Gain new skills to encourage them to be more flexible in this ever-changing environment. For parents of children from preschool to 1st grade.

Thursday, January 28, 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Meeting ID: 984 3395 8329
Passcode: CASSY
Mindfulness Corner: Try Validation

Think about the last time your child expressed an emotion that made you feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed as a parent.

Perhaps you found yourself handling it in the same way a caretaker responded to you in childhood: Don’t cry! It’s not that bad….Don’t yell at me; you are overreacting.

Next time this happens, try validation. Validation can be a powerful form of acceptance that will almost always help a child (or even an adult) feel heard and cared for during an emotional storm. Unless your child has become physically violent (endangering herself or others), which may require more immediate intervention (i.e. a time out), try a response that allows a child to feel heard and understood. The new rule in your family? All feelings are okay.

Yes, parents need to set boundaries, but allowing children to experience, express and understand their feelings can result in positive changes in your relationship and your home and family.

Here is some more info on validation and tips to help you try it out:

Welcome Author Lincoln Peirce for a Virtual Author Visit!

El Carmelo Library is hosting the event, and has generously included all PAUSD elementary libraries! New York Time’s bestselling author and author of the Big Nate series, Lincoln Peirce, will be the star of a virtual author visit with grades 3-5.

Lincoln will talk about his latest graphic novel, Max & the Midnights: Battle of the Bodkins, during the presentation, the next installment in the epic medieval adventure series that the New York Times called “just plain fun.”

Synopsis of the book: “Girl power! When Max’s wish to become a knight comes true, she is the only girl in what was considered a job just for boys. Max is thrilled, but being a knight has been anything but easy. And knight school is harder than she imagined it would be. Luckily she has her best friends—the Midknights—at her side. Especially when Byjovia finds itself under attack.”

Lincoln Peirce’s presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 12th, from 9am-10am for all cohorts/FDL students. Zoom links will be sent out closer to the date as well as book purchase information.
Reminder: Submit 2020-2021 Yearbook Portraits!

PORTRAITS! Unlike year’s past we will not be hiring an external vendor to take portrait photos for each student due to strict COVID-19 safety protocol. As such, you should be receiving an email from your Room Parent (if you haven’t already) providing a portrait submission form. Please fill out the form as soon as possible. All portrait submission forms are due by January 29th in order to make it into the final yearbook.

Yearbooks are $25 with an extended deadline to order until January 31, 2020, at which point prices will increase! Yearbooks will be made available on a first come first serve basis. Get ahead of it, don’t procrastinate!

Black History Month

Black History Month will take place in February. We are looking for volunteers to help organize events. If you are interested, please contact Andrea at
Needed: Nominating Committee

Are you looking for opportunities to get more involved with the school? Hoping to meet more Walter Hays parents? The nominating committee is a great opportunity for both! The Nominating Committee is a time limited commitment (you are done in April!) The role of the committee is to recruit new members for next year's PTA executive board. Please reach out to Andrea at if you are interested.
Holiday Recipe Sharing - Deadline Extended!
Let's stay connected over the holidays by sharing one family recipe you cherish and treasure. Prepare it, write it down, take pictures and upload it. Make sure to include a photo of you and your little one’s beautiful smiles as a welcome bonus – a rare commodity in the world of masks!
Have fun preparing it with your child and gain the culinary inspiration from our diverse Walter Hays community during these “safety first” holidays!
Our recipe sharing event has been extended to Sunday, January 31, 2021

Health & Wellness

Mandatory Directive on Travel & Quarantine
Travel Is discouraged, especially for non-essential purposes. Travel for leisure or for non-essential business is strongly discouraged and should be postponed until after the current surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations subsides. Travel involves mixing between regions and households, and because so many areas of the State and United States are also currently experiencing significant surges in COVID-19 cases, travel is discouraged and should be minimized.
Mandatory Quarantine after Long-Distance Travel into Santa Clara County
All persons traveling into Santa Clara County, whether by air, car, train, or any other means, directly or indirectly from a point of origin greater than 150 miles from the County's borders must quarantine for 10 days upon arrival.
