Next step: ELECTIONS! Walter Hays PTA members are eligible to vote in the election of our nominees. Watch for details about our General Meeting on Thursday, May 6th.
We do have openings for our Board positions. Please reach out to our Parliamentarian, Daniel Moore at if you would like to join us. The 2021-2022 Board, after Elections, will be able to vote to fill their own open positions. It is imperative that we fill our treasurer position, as without that role filled, we cannot keep our charitable status.

Walter Hays Dine & Donate Fundraiser to Support 5th Graders @ Gott's Roadside

Thank you to so many of our community members for attending our Dine and Donate night at Gott’s on March 31st. A whopping $1,777.80 was donated back to our school to go towards our 5th grade promotion. Thank you to the team of 5th grade parents for organizing this event.
"Thank you" on Behalf of the Yearbook Team!

The 2020-2021 “Virtually Together” Yearbook has now been put into print! Without the help of a small group of amazing parents and staff, this yearbook would've never made it off the ground!

A HUGE thanks to Gina Filter and Laurie Shea who stepped up way above and beyond to fill in all the gaps on behalf of our teachers and parents where our yearbook team could not.

Thank you to the teachers that dedicated time to ensure an inclusive and representative yearbook!

Thank you to the parents that reached out to families countless times to attain candid photos and class portraits and even trying their hand at designing their class pages!

Yearbook Donations Needed!

Every year, the Yearbook Team sets aside scholarship yearbooks for students who may not have the means to afford one. We believe all students should go home with a yearbook in hand at the end of the year. This year, we are looking for generous parents to donate a total of twelve more scholarship yearbooks!

To make your donation, Please select "Yes, Donate one yearbook" next to the question "Donate a yearbook to the yearbook scholarship from this purchase?" The deadline to donate is Friday, April 16th at noon.

Please contact if you have any questions!

Thank you for all your support!

Walter Hays Move-a-thon
April 18th – April 24th, 2021

Walter Hays students are motivated to raise money for the Ecumenical Hunger Program! During this past year, many families and individuals have been hit hard by the global pandemic. Walter Hays would like to help by giving to the Ecumenical Hunger Program, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in East Palo Alto that supports local families and individuals who are experiencing economic and personal hardship, as they regain stability and independence. EHP provides food, clothing, household essentials, support, and advocacy.

Students will share about the donation: “The week-long Move-a-thon, April 18th - April 24th, is where I will move as much as possible; run, walk, bike, swim, hopscotch, jump rope, play basketball and more. Donating is simple, and any pledge amount is appreciated! If you can help, please click on the link below, and choose ‘donate now’, find my name in the participant drop down, and enter your donation info. It only takes a few minutes to help make a difference. Thank you in advance for your donation and for supporting this cause. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, (student/family name).”

Mindfulness Corner: Re-Create and Restore

As we look forward to the coming week, I felt compelled to revisit a previous article that focused on a simple tool for cultivating a mindful moment and self-care. Webster defines “vacation” as an extended period of leisure and recreation. It is a time and opportunity to re-create and restore our minds, our bodies, and our sense of self.
Practicing self-care is a gift we give to ourselves as well as a gift we give to our children through example.
The Flower & Candle Breathing technique is one that many of our Walter Hays students know. Focused breathing helps us to slow down our body, release stress, and bring our attention back to the moment. It can be the first step towards restoring.
Flower and Candle Breathing
This is a wonderful strategy to use when children/parents need to stop, breathe, and relax. The activity helps to re-center attention by using imagery to find focus in the moment.
  1. Hold the left hand in a fist. Ask the child to imagine it is a flower.
  2. Hold the right hand in a fist. Ask the child to imagine it is a candle.
  3. Inhale, pretending to sniff the flower.
  4. Exhale, pretending to blow out the candle.
Breathe deeply to really smell the flower. Then exhale completely to blow the candle out. Repeat 5 times.
Wishing you moments of peace and unexpected joy!

COVID Testing
The Palo Alto Unified School District, in partnership with Predicine, Inc., will offer COVID testing for students and staff. The following testing strategy will be utilized:
  1. Any student, teacher, and staff with symptoms identified through the health screening protocols
  2. Any student, teacher, and staff who have had contact with someone with COVID-19 in the school or workplace
  3. All students, faculty, and staff with possible exposure in the context of outbreak settings
  4. Surveillance testing 2x/Month (25% of secondary students attending in-person) for individuals who are asymptomatic. Note: Surveillance testing detects the presence of COVID-19 even in individuals who may be asymptomatic.
  5. PAEA Unit Member Testing 2x/month
  6. Testing for indoor sports athletes, coaches, and support staff 2-3x week until we reach the Yellow Tier.
  7. IMPORTANT: Participating in COVID testing through PAUSD/Predicine, Inc. requires participants to consent to being tested. Signing the consent form and participating in the testing program is your consent to share results of your COVID test with the District Nurse and/or the Director of Human Resources . A copy of the consent form is included for review. A printed copy will be available at your school upon request.
