Mindfulness Corner: How To Support Our Children as They Return to the Classroom
As a parent and educator, there is some comfort and solace in hearing, “children are resilient.” They absolutely are and will continue to be resilient, and to remind us of our own need as adults to dig deep and find that resilience in our own emotional tool box.
We, also, have the responsibility to acknowledge that our children have experienced many big emotions over the past year (fear, worry, anxiety, loss, uncertainty) and we need to provide them with coping skills and supports to help them through this next stage of re-entry. But, how do we reassure our children that it is safe to return to the classroom, while encouraging them to be cautious and careful?

  1. Talk About Safety Measures: Share with your children that their school and principal have worked very hard to minimize risks to keep everyone safe (e.g., masks, social distancing, hand washing, individual desks with safety shields.) Principal Mary would not open the school if she did not believe it to be as safe as possible.
  2. Have a Routine: Routines help to support predictability and minimize uncertainty. Try to have a bedtime routine, a morning routine, and an after school routine. There is great comfort in routine for all of us.
  3. Acknowledge Feelings: Listen…listen…listen and let your children know that all feelings are ok. Stay calm, stay positive, and allow them to express those feelings and then help them to think about what they can do about it.
  4. Practice Coping Skills:
  • Mindful Breathing: Flower & Candle
  • Give yourself a hug, squeeze a little tighter while breathing in and breathe out loosening your hug and repeat 5 times.
  • Place your hand on your tummy and notice how it moves “out” as you inhale and “in” as you exhale. Repeat 5 times.
  • Positive Thinking: think of 3 thinks that made you smile today.
  • Go for a walk.
Wishing you moments of happiness and unexpected joy!

  2. Be a Friend by Salina Yoon
  3. The Friend Ship by Kat Yeh
  4. Oliver’s Game by Matt Tavares
  5. Be Kind by Pat Ziethow Miller

The Core Values Committee, headed by Lise Latour ( and Zeehan Selha (, invite all members of the Walter Hays community to ask questions about the committee. We welcome all ideas and suggestions you may have about our Core Values Program.

Green Tip! Foot and Pedal Power to the Rescue!

Non-electric sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and minivans are the #1 producer of greenhouse gas emissions. Walking or biking to school, or for trips of 2 miles or less, supports others to do the same, and do it more safely.
